Macau lawmaker calls for better protection for migrant workers

A Macau legislator has called for improved rights for imported labor, saying workers should be able to make complaints against their employers without the fear of being sacked.

Kwan Tsui Hang said imported workers basically have the same rights as local workers, but the imported workers usually don't understand their own rights, local media reports.

"To solve this problem, in my opinion, we should amend the imported labor law. We should amend it so that if employees complain that the employer violated the law, the employer cannot sack the employee. We have to close the gate, so that employers cannot take revenge afterwards," she was cited as saying.

The lawmaker also called for expanded insurance coverage and for amendments to the law for work injury compensation.

Macau’s casinos are highly dependent on foreign imported labor amidst acute shortages in the pool of available local workers. However, non-residents are restricted as to the work they can perform and aren’t able to find jobs as dealers in casinos.
