The Macau Taxi Passengers Association has handed a petition to the government with 5,470 signatures urging for improvements to the service, saying the current state of the industry is a disgrace.
The petition asks the government to reduce unlawful activities and review Macau’s long-term taxi needs.
The association says that “extortion, violence and scamming” are an everyday affair in the territory, with drivers regularly charging illegal fares.
“The MTPA is hopeful that the announcement yesterday of Mr Raimundo Arrais do Rosario as the new Secretary for Lands, Public Works and Transport will represent a new start for transportation in Macau and that Mr Rosario will take this dreadful taxi problem seriously,” association president Andrew Scott said.
The association called for measures such as the introduction of e-taxi driver licenses, GPS tracking, audio visual recording equipment, more taxi stand controllers and undercover officers, more taxi-related enforcement power to the police, on-the-spot evidence collection, increased penalties and possible license suspension for violations.
