Macau TPI falls, hotel rates to blame

Macau’s Tourist Price Index for the first quarter of 2016 decreased 6.7 percent year on year, mainly due to lower hotel rates, says Macau’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

According to the DSEC announcement, the price index of accommodation decreased the most significantly in the first quarter, down 23.8 percent year-on-year, followed by Entertainment and Cultural Activities, down 2.4 percent.

The index reflects the price change of goods and services purchased by visitors. It has been observed there exists a positive correlation between accommodation and the amount spent on facilities in the resort, including gambling.

In January, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) reported that the average occupancy rate for all hotels was down 6.7 percent year on year, to 83.8 percent, with an average price of MOP1,491, 7.8 percent cheaper than 2014.
