Malaysia to amend law to tackle illegal online gambling

Malaysia is considering amending archaic laws to crackdown on widespread illegal online gambling activities.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said police are having trouble tackling the problem because of the outdated legislation, which falls under the jurisdiction of several ministries, local media reports.

The amendments would cover provisions under Communications and Multimedia Act, Lotteries Act 1952, Common Gaming House Act 1953 and Betting Ordinance 1953.

He said police had recently been forced to resort to Prevention of Crime Act laws to detain 29 for illegal activities, because the gambling laws were not adequate.

As of November this year, Nur Jazlan said only 5,834 successful raids were carried out on illegal gambling outlets out of the 109,000 raids.

Of this, he said 15,154 operators and punters were detained in the raids.
