MGTO expects 33 million visitors in 2015


The Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) is forecasting 33 million arrivals in 2015, up from 31.5 million, with modest growth expected during Chinese New Year in February.

MGTO director Helena de Senna Fernandes says some one million people are expected to arrive during the first week of Chinese New Year celebrations, with about 800,000 mainland Chinese visitors.

Senna Fernandes’ comments come as the total arrivals for 2014 increased by 7.5 per cent to 31.525 million, with arrivals from mainland China accounting for 21.252 million, an increase of 14.1 per cent. Visitors from Hong Kong declined by 5.0 per cent to 6.426 million, with the fastest growth from South Korea up 16.9 percent to 554,000.

Between January and September 2014 visitors in Macau spent some $39.7 billion, up by 0.7 per cent -  with more than $34 billion spent on gaming.

Mainland China visitors still provided for 67.4 per cent of the city’s arrivals, with 42.4 per cent of all mainland tourist coming from Guangdong province.

Other details included occupancy rates at 86.4 per cent, up 3.4 per cent with total overnight guests for the year at 10.71 million.
