Osaka urged to build huge conference center at Yumeshima IR

The ninth meeting of Osaka’s IR Promotion Conference was held on November 14, and it was agreed that the prospective Yumeshima IR should include an international conference center that can host more than 5000 people, which is nearly double the size of largest currently-existing conference center in the city and would be among the largest in Asia.

Moreover, the committee members also advised building an exhibition center of about 100,000 square meters in area, making it slightly larger than Tokyo Big Sight, which at 95,420 square meters is Japan’s largest exhibition center at the present time.

Also at discussion at this meeting was the question of whether or not the Yumeshima site will be safe from flooding. The analysis of the members is that the ground level is sufficiently high above sea level.

The IR Promotion Conference was originally launched in March 2017 under the chairmanship of Hiroshi Mizohata, president of the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau. Professor Ichiro Tanioka, president of Osaka University of Commerce, was later listed as the deputy chairman.

Osaka’s IR Promotion Conference is a body that was created to advise the prefectural and city government on a wide range of issues related to the anticipated establishment of an IR at the Yumeshima site, including strategies to gain the understanding of the local public.
