Pansy Ho says HK extradition bill “well intended”

Pansy Ho, the co-chair and an executive director of MGM China Holdings, has defended the Hong Kong government’s handling of riots rocking the city and called its now withdrawn extradition bill “well intended.”

Ho is scheduled to make the comments in a speech to the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday. Ho and Hong Kong businesswoman Annie Wu Suk-ching are representing the Hong Kong Federation of Women, according to the South China Morning Post.

“The views of a small group of radical protesters do not represent the views of all 7.5 million Hongkongers. The systematic and calculated violent acts of this group have never been condoned by all Hongkongers,” they will say.

Ho says the bill as “well-intended” but was “hijacked” by radical protesters who have used it as “propaganda to undermine the Hong Kong government’s authority to protect the rights of one of its citizens.”

The introduction of the extradition bill, which would allow Hong Kong citizens to be extradited to the Mainland for trial, triggered weeks of increasingly violent protests in the city. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has announced the withdrawal of the legislation, however, the protests have continued, with protesters pressing further demands.

Ho also defends the Hong Kong police, who have been accused of using strong arm tactics in seeking to quell the riots.

“Tear gas and rubber bullets are tools used by police forces around the world, and are not unique to the Hong Kong police,” the paper cites Ho as saying. “Used according to law enforcement procedures, tear gas and rubber bullets are an effective way to create a distance between the police and the protesters, and to avoid close physical confrontation and resulting injuries.”
