HKJC imposes strict restrictions over coronavirus

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has announced a series of measures, including strict attendance restrictions at races, as a measure to prevent the rapid spread of the Wuhan Coronavirus.

A press release explained, “Effective from the race meeting on Saturday, February 8, apart from trainers, jockeys, Club officials, as well as Stewards and Voting Members who oversee the governance of the Club and race meetings, only horse owners and their guests will be admitted to the racecourses. It is our estimation that the number of customers will be reduced to around 1,200.”

“The above arrangements will continue for all subsequent race meetings during the critical next two weeks. The Club will continue to monitor and review the situation for further announcement,” the press release added.

While digital betting continues apace, HKJC also shut down its brick-and-mortar betting offices around Hong Kong.

Additionally, the HKJC and the Macau Jockey Club cancelled the 2020 Hong Kong-Macau Interport Series. This annual two-race series comprises the Macau Hong Kong Trophy, originally set for March 15, 2020 at Taipa Racecourse; and the Hong Kong Macau Trophy, which was to be scheduled in May 2020 at Sha Tin Racecourse.

HKJC noted that it was responding to requests from the Hong Kong government.
