Queensland rejects cruise ship terminal in IR proposal

Queensland has rejected plans for a cruise ship terminal to be built on Australia’s Gold Coast as part of a $7.5 billion ($7 billion) integrated resort project being proposed by a group of Asian investors lead by China’s ASF Consortium.Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said the plans for the terminal on vacant state land at Doug Jennings Park and parts of the Southport Spit had been rejected due to community concerns.Seeney said ASF Consortium would remain in the bidding process for a regional integrated resort. It is expected they will receive a request for detailed proposal documents this week.“Throughout this process the Government has repeatedly stated a number of conditions have to be met before the State could commit to the proposed project and before state land would be made available,” Seeney said in a statement.“These have included that state land would only be made available for development if ASF could demonstrate community support for the scale of development proposed at the Broadwater.“The very clear message from all Gold Coast MPs is that the community does not support the development of Doug Jennings Park and wants The Spit retained as a recreational area.”ASF was one of two Asian bidders short-listed for two regional casino licenses being offered by the state. Two other consortiums are bidding for a third license for a resort in downtown Brisbane.Both have been met by resistance from the local community due to concerns about their environmental impact. The resorts will be heavily reliant on bringing in tourists from Asia to be viable projects.
