Service industry will still reign, despite automation: Tourism official

The Philippines Tourism Ministry said it is optimistic that the country’s unique brand of service will continue to play a strong role in its economy, despite the advent of artificial intelligence and automation.

Robert Alabado, Assistant Secretary for Tourism Development was speaking to the audience at G2E Philippines in Manila, held at the Marriot Manila on Wednesday.

Besides the upgrading of teachers, training facilities and service education across the country, the Philippines is also continuing to invest heavily in tourism infrastructures, such as roads connecting major tourism destinations and major airports.

However, the country’s MICE industry has been identified as in need of improvement, said Alabado.

“The Philippines is lagging when it comes to MICE facilities, compared to our Asian neighbors.”

Alabado said he hopes that by 2030, the Philippines will be on par with its neighbors in terms of MICE facility offerings and the number of events hosted.
