Strike Casino closes for failure to pay increased fees

The state government of Goa has closed down a casino at the Grand Hyatt in Goa for non-payment of license fees, local media reports.

According to a report from Times of India, the Grand Hyatt-located-casino, named Strike Casino, failed to pay the increased license fee of Rs 40 crore (US$5.9 million), after being given a grace period up to May 8 to pay the fee.

It is understood that the operator has made an application seeking to run the casino from an area of 300 square meters, which would attract a lower fee, according to a Home Department official.

“If its operation is within 300 square meters, it will have to pay Rs 20 crore,” the officer said.

The Strike Casino is not the first operator in Goa to be stung by the increased hiked license fees. Two other casinos had also shut down shop after the hike in license fees.
