Telangana considers ban on online poker and rummy

The Telangana government is considering banning online poker and rummy and classify it with other forms of gambling and betting, local media reports.

It is understood that the Telangana Gaming Act, 1974 may be amended by way of an ordinance and a new definition of ‘cyberspace’ would be inserted in the Gaming Act.

Playing online matka, sports betting, poker and rummy could now incur criminal penalties ranging from a fine of  Rs. 5,000 (US$77) for the first offence to an imprisonment and higher fine for a second offence.

If the proposal sails through, Telangana would be the first state in the country to categorize rummy and poker within the category of gambling.
