Telecom company launches online lottery in Khmer

Cambodia telecom company Cootel has launched a new legally-registered online lottery in cooperation with Dream Win company. The lottery, named Khmerlottery was registered with the Ministry of Economy and Finance in December last year with an investment of $5 million, according to Pich Chetra, executive director of KhmerLottery.

Khieu Sopheak, the Ministry of Interior’s spokesman, said the business had the support of the ministry.

“The gambling and lotteries that the government approved are under the control of the law. They also benefit the national budget.

“For lotteries, every country has its own national lottery or legally registered lotteries and with Cambodia having a legal lottery, that is not a problem for society,” Sopheak said, adding there will be a crackdown on illegal gambling.

Chetra said the company went with the online platform given the increasing use of smartphones in the country, and said the new lottery will help to stem the growth of illegal, underground offerings.

“Khmerlottery is legally registered, so we are fully responsible,” Mr. Chetra said. “We want illegal gambling and lotteries to be combated.”
