Tokoname City council makes IR appeal to Aichi governor

The city council of Tokoname appealed on Friday to Aichi Governor Hideaki Omura, calling for an accelerated feasibility study for siting an IR within their municipality.

Tokoname city is host to Chubu Centrair International Airport, and their concept is that an IR might be built on the same reclaimed island upon which the airport itself sits.

City Council chairman Kazutoshi Kawahara met with Governor Omura in person and was quoted by the local media as saying, “We should firmly deal with the issue of gambling addiction and build a wonderful IR on the airport island.” Governor Omura responded, “The prefectural government will examine the merits and the pending issues.”

Tokoname Mayor Norihiko Kataoka, who has also received an appeal from the city council, made statements that seemed to indicate he holds a more cautious stance: “While I have hopes for the contributions an IR might play in our regional development, I am concerned about its impact on gambling addiction and public security. Many points remain unclear. Let’s see what kinds of policies the national government comes up with.”

The Chubu Centrair International Airport in Tokoname city is the nation’s 8th busiest airport, having served more than 10 million passengers in 2015.
