South Korean authorities have arrested two cyber security experts for allegedly hacking into an illegal gambling website on behalf of a rival firm,
The Korea Times said the National Police Agency identified the owner of a cyber security company and his employee by their surnames Yang and Lee, respectively, as accepting one billion won ($911,000) from an illegal gambling website operator in May last year to attack its competitor.
The hackers disabled the rival website multiple times through overwhelming it with traffic to make the service unavailable, police said.
Police found that they hacked into 12,000 computers at six banks to use their signals for the attacks, the Times said.
Sports Toto is the only form of licensed sports gambling in Korea. But police believe that tens of thousands of gamers, including minors, gamble through illegal websites and bet large sums of money.
