Wakayama symposium promotes Marina City IR

At a symposium held on Monday, the Wakayama prefectural and city governments made their first substantial attempt to explain directly to the local public their advocacy for the creation of an IR at the Marina City site.

The Wakayama IR Promotion Council, established last September, was the host of the event, and both Governor Yoshinobu Nisaka and Mayor Masahiro Obana briefly spoke.

The majority of the audience of about three hundred consisted of business people gathered from within and from outside the prefecture.

The vision for the potential Marina City IR was outlined by Ichiro Takase, the prefectural planning department bureaucrat who heads the Wakayama IR Promotion Council. Aside from his other points, he revealed a potential plan to create a high-speed boat service that would connect the Marina City IR directly with Kansai International Airport (which is built upon an artificial island not far from Wakayama).

At least one international operator attended the event, as local press reports referred to comments made by Jonathan Strock, director of casino development at Lucien Barrière Hotels & Casinos. Strock focused on measures his company takes to address the issue of problem gambling.
