The World Poker Tour’s debut in Macau, originally set for June 18th to 24th, has reportedly been canceled, with the company issuing a statement saying the series ‘will not move forward’.

Announced in mid-March, the event was going to be organized in partnership with Wynn Macau and Allied Gaming and Entertainment (AGAE).

It was going to feature a HK$40,000 ($5,120) buy-in Championship event from June 18th to 24, with a special WPT High Roller event with a buy-in of HK$200,000 ($25,600) from June 19th to 20th.
The cancellation also comes just weeks after the WPT also canceled its WPT Passport special series, scheduled for mid-May, with reports that there were approval issues.
In a statement published to social media, cited by poker.org, the group notes that: ‘WPT, Wynn Macau, and Allied Gaming and Entertainment regret any inconvenience or disappointment for players from around the world who were planning to travel to Macau and play in the event.’
The group did express its hope that the event could eventually take place in Macau, noting:
‘WPT remains committed to working with Wynn Macau and AGAE in the future to bring world-class poker tournaments back to the region.’
In a March press release, WPT CEO Adam Pliska had stated that “Macau has long been a sought-after destination for us, wanting to deliver the WPT experience to the region”.
Linda Chen, President of Wynn Macau, also noted in the same release that “We are thrilled to partner with World Poker Tour to host one of the most prestigious global poker competitions in Macau, marking its debut in this vibrant city.”
