Xi expected to visit Macau next month

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit Macau between December 18 and 20, his first visit in five years, despite the protests ongoing in neighboring Hong Kong. His visit is in connection with celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the handover of Macau to Chinese sovereignty.

During Xi’s last visit in December 2014, he urged Macau to reduce its reliance on the gaming sector, and his comments in this regard are expected to be a focus of considerable interest.

Last October, Xi visited the neighboring city of Zhuhai to preside over the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, but did not enter the SAR.

It is not yet clear if senior representatives from Portugal will also join the celebrations.
