Young men accepting of casinos

The Kanagawa Shimbun, a newspaper which serves the city of Yokohama and its surrounding region, has discovered that there is one segment of the Japanese public that does support the legalization of casino gambling—men under the age of 30.

This newspaper’s polling found that among young men, 55.9 percent approved of the establishment of IRs and only 40 percent opposed it.

Japanese women and older people, however, remain overwhelmingly opposed to domestic casinos.

The comprehensive figure for the residents of the Kanagawa (Yokohama) region was 68 percent opposed and only 24.5 percent in favor.

International operators have great interest in Yokohama’s Yamashita Pier site as the possible location of an IR, as it is part of the Japanese capital region with a total population of over 35 million people. Analysts thus expect it could potentially become the largest and most successful IR within Japan.

However, with the general public opposed to proposal and the local business community sending mixed signals, it remains an open question whether or not the Yokohama municipal government will actually choose to pursue an IR development.
