Best Sunshine to compete for rival’s land in Saipan

Best Sunshine International plans to bid for land currently held by rival Mariana Resort & Spa to build its new integrated resort on Saipan, local media reports.

The land is in Marpi, one of the most coveted areas on the island. Best Sunshine plans to build the world’s largest water park, thousands of hotel rooms, and state-of-the-art shopping facilities, executives told local media at a press conference.

Hong Kong-based Best Sunshine is planning an investment of $7 billion built over several stages on the island. The first stage is currently under construction in a location known as Garapan.

However, land is scarce and Best Sunshine is eyeing the Marpi location to be able to place all of its amenities in one place, rather than scattered across the island.

“We are searching everywhere, the entire island. We’ve made offers to other areas also. We didn’t concentrate only on Marpi,” CEO Mark Brown was cited as saying.

“Because of the parcel of the land—where it is situated—the beauty of it. [It is] the one piece where you could put together an incredible resort. …Name another piece that big, that beautiful on the water. That doesn’t exist on the island, really.”
