CAG warns Kerala of fake lottery ticket proliferation

The Comptroller & Auditor General of India has slammed the Kerala government for its relaxed attitude towards fake lottery tickets, which have proliferated the state’s lottery industry.

According to the CAG Report on Revenue, which was tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday, Kerala’s district lottery offices have received 348,699 fake tickets between 2011 and 2017.

However, the CAG says the government hasn’t done enough to avoid malpractice in its lottery industry, and lacks the proper enforcement capabilities to stop the proliferation of fake lottery tickets.

The state government said that cases were registered regarding the production of fake tickets, and that simply said that “inquiry in the cases is progressing and penal provisions could be initiated only on completion of the inquiry.”

However, the CAG said the government reply was not acceptable, as it should be finding suitable means and procedures to supervise the conduct of lotteries, as per the Lottery (Regulation) Rules, 2010.
