Compensation limit increased for workers unfairly dismissed

Macau employees unjustifiably dismissed from the workplace will be entitled to claim a maximum of MOP20,000 ($2,500) in compensation, an increase of 42.8 percent on the previous value.

The compensation will be awarded when a contract is settled by an employer without just cause, entitling the employee to claim compensation worth one month’s salary for each year they spent in the job up to a maximum of MOP20,000.

The amendment to the Labor Relations Act further stipulates that the maximum monthly basic remuneration is reviewed every two years, “and may be updated according to the evolution of economic development.”

The unemployment rate in Macau was 1.7 percent and underemployment rate 0.4 percent from December to February, while the total labor force was 403,400 and the labor force participation rate stood at 74.0 percent.
