New Zealand entry restrictions expected to hit gaming sector

The government of New Zealand’s decision to impose the world’s toughest measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, is expected to hit the gaming industry, and the tourism industry more broadly, very hard.

Effective from midnight Sunday, all travellers, except for those coming from the Pacific islands, will have to self-isolate for fourteen days on their arrival to New Zealand. All cruise ships have also been banned from New Zealand until June 30, and further measures to stop mass gatherings are expected to follow.

Gaming companies such as SkyCity Entertainment have so far maintained silence over these measures.

However, companies such as Air New Zealand have announced that they will cut international capacity by 85 percent in the next few months, and placed itself into a trading halt today to allow it time to more fully assess the operational and financial impacts of global travel restrictions.

Around 41 percent of the airline's annual revenue comes from international flights.
