Best Sunshine says it's in compliance with anti-smoking law

VIP gaming investor Best Sunshine said it is within the anti-smoking law at its Saipan casino due to the law stating that smoking is not regulated in the “enclosed gaming areas of a casino establishment,” the company’s legal counsel Viola Alepuyo told the media.

“We still maintain our position that we are in compliance with the law,” Alepuyo was quoted by local publication Marianas Variety as saying.

The counsel’s comments follow allegations that the company has been breaking the smoking law, with Rep. Edwin Propst saying he and other lawmakers may take Best Sunshine to court.

Alepuyo said Best Sunshine has also installed air curtains, improved its ventilation system, and commissioned air quality tests.

“If you look at the law,” she added, “the section that tells you where smoking is not regulated, it says ‘enclosed’ gaming areas of the casino…. It says ‘fully enclosed and well ventilated areas” at the departure terminal of commonwealth airports.”

Alepuyo said even before the layout of the casino was designed, Best Sunshine had looked into the law and whether it allows smoking in the casino.
