Cairns opens up for another major casino investor

Queensland’s Treasurer Curtis Pitt says Cairns’ doors are wide open for another major investor to build an integrated resort and casino in the region, local media reports.

The tourism industry has “moved beyond a recovery phase into a boom period,” and is well positioned being so close to the international airport, said Pitt.

With the removal of the casino component from the Aquis development at Yorkeys Knob, a regional casino license would now be available.

According to The Cairns Post, the State Government may soon call for expressions of interest for the regional integrated resort casino license.

“We have investors from all parts of the world flocking to the region to capitalise on the intrinsic and highly compelling attractiveness of the Tropical North Queensland destination,” said Pitt during a speech at a Cairns Chamber of Commerce lunch.

“Our destination is one of Australia’s most significant and fastest growing and we need to ensure that we continue to innovate and develop new room stock to keep pace with the global tourism growth opportunities that the next decade will provide.”

Pitt said the region needed investment in five and six-star developments to cater to the Asian market.
