China lottery sales up 5.2 percent in six months

Lottery sales in Mainland China rose by 5.2 percent to RMB187.6 billion ($30.7 billion) in the first six months of the year, state-news agency Xinhua reported.

Citing government figures, Xinhua reported that welfare lottery sales increased by 4.4 percent to  RMB102.8 billion, while sports lottery sales increased 6.2 percent to RMB84.83 billion.

East China's Shandong Province led the rise in the first half of 2015, with its lottery sales up by RMB1.88 billion from a year ago, while Zhejiang, Hebei and Henan provinces as well as Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, also posted large increases, according to the Ministry of Finance.

According to Xinhua, China’s lottery sales were inflated by heavy gambling on the 2014 World Cup in June, contributing to 24-percent surge in lottery sales for the whole year.
