China sports lottery sales boom amid World Cup fever

Lottery sales related to the World Cup have hit a new high, local media reported statistics from China’s General Administration of Sport show.

By midday on June 21st, sales of sports lotteries amounted to 4 billion yuan ($640 million), or about one sixth of last year’s total sales. An official from the country’s sports authorities estimates that sales will top 10 billion yuan during this year’s World Cup, the reports said.

Daily sales were less than 100 million yuan before the World Cup but more than 400 million since the event started on June 12.

Online lottery agent 500.com is making roughly three to five times the daily average than before the World Cup, the reports cited Pan Zhengming, CFO of 500.com Ltd. as saying.
