Duterte extends Metro Manila, Cebu City lockdown

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has placed Metro Manila and Cebu City on lockdown again starting June 16, following a marked rise in coronavirus cases, local media reports.

The announcement was made by presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on Monday, the day that the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) was set to be lifted.

Areas in which the GCQ will be extended include areas within Luzon, including Metro Manila, Cebu City, several areas in Mindanao, several areas in Central Visayas, and Talisay City.

The rest of the country will remain under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) until the month’s end.

The decision follows the recommendation of the Inter-agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).

Last week, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. chairman Andrea Domingo said she hoped that Manila's casinos would be able to reopen in early June.
