Gaming drives rebound in Macau’s 3Q23 GDP

Macau’s economy thrived in the third quarter, with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) up 116.1 percent yearly, boosted by gaming.

According to official data from Macau authorities, the exports of gaming services grew by some 781.4 percent yearly during the quarter, while those of other tourism services rose by 255.4 percent.
Domestic demand also increased, up by 15.7 percent yearly, while imports of goods increased 25.7 percent and that of services rose 58.2 percent yearly.
Looking at the overall situation, ‘private construction investment swelled by 61.5 percent year-on-year, as gaming enterprises stepped up investment amid the revival of the local economy,’ notes the local statistics bureau (DSEC).
The group further notes that tourism numbers swelled to 8.3 million in 3Q23, some ’83.5 percent of the visitor number in the same quarter of 2019, underpinning the ‘rebound in external demand for services’, in particular those related to gaming.
