Giles Thompson appointed as RV chief

Racing Victoria’s acting chief executive Giles Thompson has been appointed as the body's chief executive on a permanent basis, local media reports.

"It is with great pleasure that I advise you on behalf of the Board that Giles Thompson has been appointed to the position of Racing Victoria Chief Executive on a permanent basis effective immediately,” wrote RV chairman Mike Hirst in a letter to staff on Friday.

"The Board has been impressed with Giles' performance in guiding the organisation throughout 2017," Hirst added.

"We know that he will provide you with great leadership and strategic guidance, while striving to maintain Victoria's position of pre-eminence and maximizing the opportunities to grow our sport."

Hirst said the delay in appointing a chief executive took longer than expected and due to “the impacts of the proposed changes to the Board and specifically the Director appointment process.”

"This is a very exciting time for the organisation and more broadly the sport with participation at record levels with over 60,000 active owners in Victoria and great racing on the track with wagering up over 9 per cent this financial year," said Hirst.

"This success has led to a strong financial position, and the prospect of another healthy surplus this year, which enables us to invest in racing's future as we work together on our vision of 'racing for all.”
