Kinmen takes swing at casino referendum

Taiwan’s Kinmen County is set to vote in October to decide whether to permit casino development on the island, Taiwan News reports.

The news comes after a referendum was held in Penghu last year, with over 80 percent of the 33,000 voters saying “no” to casino development on the island.

According to the Offshore Islands Development Act, six areas outside Taiwan’s main island coast are allowed to hold a local plebiscite to decide on casino development, which will be passed as long as ballots reach 50 percent.

According to Taiwan News, a Kuomintang (KMT) official filed a petition to hold a referendum with the Kinmen County Government.

Kinmen will be expecting its very first referendum if the petition passes the screening.
