Law panel examines legalizing gambling

The Law Commission of India is examining whether sports betting and gambling in casinos can be legalized, Hindustan Times reports.

While the top law panel is yet to make up its mind, sources say that a draft gambling act is “under serious consideration.”

Gambling on the internet is hard to stop, and a law would mean regulation of the sector, commission sources said.

“It (betting and gambling) is already happening through the internet and it is hard to stop in the absence of an updated law,” said a member of the commission.

In February, commission chairman Justice BS Chauhan attended the three-day ICE Totally Gaming conference, meeting regulators from different countries and asking for their inputs for an India specific model.

“There are moral and ethical dimensions involved that have kept gambling and betting illegal so far. We have to see if betting can encourage match fixing. The regulatory framework will have to be pretty strict,” a source said.
