LRT to complete end of the year, operational by 2019

The Taipa Island Light Rail Transit (LRT) section will be finished by the end of the year, and will be operational by 2019, said the Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Raimundo do Rosário.

The Secretary made the comments on the sidelines of a committee meeting held on Thursday at the Legislative Assembly, reported by local media.

“By the end of this year we will finish the construction of the Taipa Island LRT section, which is comprised of 11 stations,” said the secretary.

The secretary also mentioned that the final budget for the Taipa line would be MOP11 billion (US$1.4 billion), which includes fees relating to the construction of a depot in Taipa.

The secretary however did not mention any dates regarding the Macau Peninsula.

The Taipa section includes stops serving the Cotai casino resorts which will connect to the Macau International Airport and the new Pac On ferry terminal located near the airport.

Previously, investment analysts said that any delays of the LRT beyond the end of 2016 would be negative for the new Cotai resorts, given the increasing focus on mass market customers in Macau.
