Macau junket numbers down to 120 in 2017: Chan

Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau director, Paulo Martins Chan says he plans to authorize “slightly more than 120” licenses for VIP gaming promoters in 2017.

The number is worrying for Macau’s VIP gaming sector, despite showing some signs of recovery last quarter. In January last year, the regulator confirmed 141 gaming promoter licenses.

The DICJ boss, who was quoted by Macao Daily News, said the year-on-year decline was partly the result of junket operators failing to meet the DICJ’s standards for financial accounting.

He also said he would be conducting a special investigation of local junket operators after Chinese New Year, and consider tightening the requirements for an individual or company to obtain a junket promoter license.
