Macau visitor arrivals down in May, but staying longer

Total visitor arrivals in Macau dropped 2.8 percent year-on-year to 2.5 million in May, according to data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) last week.

Whilst there was a drop in arrivals, the statistics also show that visitors are staying longer, with the number of overnight visitors increasing by 3.8 percent year on year and average length of stay rising by 0.1 day to 1.2 days.

However, Mainland tourist arrivals declined 3.5 percent year-on-year in May.

This trend was also observed during the long weekend in May, where it was reported that only 30 percent of Macau’s hotel rooms were booked by tourists from Mainland China.
At the time, Chan Chi Kit, President of the Macau Hoteliers and Innkeepers Association said the number of bookings from Chinese tourists represented a 30 to 40 percent fall compared to last year.

In the first five months of 2016, visitor arrivals totalled nearly 12.4 million, down marginally by 0.8 percent year-on-year.
