Melco, Wynn Resorts add funds to typhoon relief


Macau’s community is set to receive another helping hand with the addition of relief funds from Melco Resorts and Wynn Resorts, according to two separate announcements released last week.

Melco Resorts and Entertainment said it plans to allocate MOP 30 million (US$3.75 million)  to support its employees and their families, and the community.

Two thirds of the relief fund will go to support their employees and their families, while the remaining one third will be used to help rebuild the community.

Mr. Lawrence Ho, Chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts & Entertainment said, “Right now, our top priority is to get all of Macau to stand tall again so that all of us are better prepared and more resilient for the future.”

Melco said it is also currently in the process of establishing an independent committee, which will be comprised of representatives from community associations, education groups, trade unions and other civic organizations, to oversee the allocation of funds to ensure that all cash is delivered to those most in need.

Wynn Resorts on the other hand, is splitting its relief efforts between Macau and Texas, the latter of which was devastated by Hurricane Harvey last week.  

"It is a very sad and tragic coincidence that in two major cities where we have our employees and customers – Macau, in the People's Republic of China, and Houston, Texas -- tragedy struck within a few days of each other,” said Steve Wynn, Wynn Resorts chairman and CEO.

"In Macau, our employees' homes have been damaged and their lives have been interrupted; many of them have suffered.  So, too, have our customers who were caught in the grip of the typhoon. In the United States, in the state of Texas, many of our customers and business associates have experienced the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.

Like Melco, Wynn Resorts has pledged MOP30 million to assist families and local businesses in recovery from the typhoon.

The company also said it will “continue its aggressive community volunteer efforts”, in which hundreds of Wynn employees distributed water and supplies to the community, and now continue with cleaning up and helping to rebuild affected neighborhoods.

In Houston, Texas, the company has similarly committed $3.75 million dollars to aid in helping those affected by the hurricane, with a focus on the financially disadvantaged.
