MGIA chairman sentenced to jail for breach of privacy laws

Chairman of the Macau Gaming Information Association, Mr Charlie Choi, has been found guilty of violating Macau’s privacy laws, and has been sentenced to six months in prison, Inside Asian Gaming reports.

Mr. Choi was found guilty of also failing to comply with an order for Macau’s Judiciary Police to delete the information of indebted gamblers from the “Wonderful World” website.

A testimony from Lai Wen Qu, the nephew of Yuanhua Group owner Lai Changxing said that Mr. Choi had told him in a telephone conversation that he had uploaded data onto the website, the web address of which matched that of Choi’s gaming company.

It follows from a case in 2013, when Mr. Choi was charged for publishing the personal information of players who had failed to repay gambling debts on Wonderful World, which was followed by a police order to delete all related information from the website in 2014.

Mr. Choi, speaking to IAG on Tuesday, insisted that he is not the owner of Wonderful World and is therefore unable to shut it down.

He also expressed disappointment at the ruling, and said he would appeal the decision.
