New rail links to boost China tourists to Laos

Chinese visitors are likely to be the biggest tourist group visiting Laos over the next five years as new infrastructure is put into place, including a rail link between Kunming and the capital Vientiane, local media reported, citing tourism executives in the country.

A total of 40 hotels, including five international chains, are expected to open during the same period, it said.

The international brands include the Ramada, InterContinental, Crown Plaza, Sofitel and Marriott. They all plan hotels in the capital.

Laos had 3.7 million tourist arrivals last year, with income of US$600 million. The government aims for 3.9 million tourists this year, with that number forecast to jump to 10 million within five years.
