Pachinko parlors continue to fall in number

The hard times for the pachinko industry continue to be reflected dramatically in the decline in the numbers of pachinko parlors month by month.

According to the All Japan Pachinko and Pachislot Cooperative Association, there were 9,219 pachinko parlors nationally by the end of January. That was a net decline of 18 parlors in the first month of 2019 alone.

A year earlier, at the end of 2017, there were 9,681 pachinko parlors nationally, meaning that there was a net reduction of 444 pachinko parlors over the course of the year 2018, which works out to an average of 37 fewer pachinko parlors each month.

At present, there does not seem to be any prospect of a recovery in the pachinko industry, hit by national population decline, tightening regulations, and the fact that younger audiences are more attracted to mobile phones and other forms of entertainment.
