Penang ramps up gambling crackdown

Penang’s law enforcement is intensifying its crackdown on illegal gambling businesses in the state, New Straits Times reports.

“This year alone, we have carried out 211 raids from a statewide special operation to eliminate illegal gambling,” said Penang police chief commissioner Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye.

“From raids this year, we seized 1,234 simulator machines and laptops worth millions of ringgit and arrested 315 people,” he said.

In 2016, authorities in Penang saw the arrest of 234 people in connection to illegal gambling operators. Over 140 raids were conducted in the year, seeing the seizure of 703 gaming simulator machines and laptops.

Another special operation will be conducted this year, focusing on illegal gambling operations, says Chuah.
