Tourism watch dog clamps down on unruly tours

Chinese tourists will soon find it near impossible to join domestic tours that involve gambling, sex or drugs under new regulations from the Chinese National Tourism Administration, local media reports.

Last week, the Chinese National Tourism Administration released new rules that are understood to be aimed at domestic tours - specifically those that have been known to steer clients to illegal or immoral activities.

The government said that any tour guides found breaching the new rules could face fines of up to CNY20,000 (US$3012), and could lose their licenses.

The administration did not say how it planned to track potential violations, however, it launched an electronic license system for tour guides last Wednesday.

Guides have also been prohibited from forcing clients to shop at businesses during tours, a common method for guides to receive “kickbacks” while on the job.

The new rules are set to take effect on January 1, 2018.
