Turf clubs appeal for favorable GST ruling

The Turf Authorities of India (TAI) has approached Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to discuss GST implications on horse-betting, local media reports.

The Turf Club delegation, led by Royal Western India Turf Club’s chairman Vivek Jain reportedly met with the finance minister to discuss implications of the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) on horse-racing, which is currently poised to now include skill gaming, gambling, betting, casinos, lotteries as part of its coverage.

It is not clear whether horse-race betting would fall into the new GST rules.

According to Jain, the finance minister gave the delegation a brief but intent hearing. Among other issues, Jain highlighted the problems faced by the horse-racing industry post demonetization and impressed upon him that, in this time of crisis, the sport needs a friendly approach both from the Centre and the State government.

Jain requested Jaitley for a favourable consideration if and when GST comes into play between April and September.

Jaitley however, did not give any commitment on the GST rates for horse-race betting, according to reports from local media.
