Visitor spending in 17Q1 rises 16.6 percent


Total visitor spending in Macau amounted to MOP 13.5 billion (US$1.7 billion) in the first quarter of 2017, representing an increase of 16.6 percent year-on-year, according to data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

The first quarter saw spending by overnight visitors increase 19.6 percent year-on-year to MOP 10.6 billion, while same day visitor spending increased 6.7 percent to MOP 2.9 billion.

In terms of country, visitors from mainland China spent the most per capita, rising 13.6 percent year-on-year to MOP2,002, while per capita spending by visitors from Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan grew by 11.6 percent, 0.4 percent and 1.8 percent year-on-year, respectively.

According to the data, most of the spending was on shopping - at 43.7 percent, while accommodation and food & beverage made up of 26.9 percent and 21.3 percent respectively.

It was also noted that visitors coming to Macau for MICE events had the highest per-capita spending at MOP 3,284, up 4.9 percent year-on-year.
