Chiba Mayor Toshihito Kumagai announced on Tuesday that his city would not be moving forward with an IR bid, in spite of the eight specific proposals that his municipality had received for the Makuhari district from private companies and consortiums.

Chiba Mayor Toshihito Kumagai stated on Tuesday that his city’s decision on whether or not to go forward with an IR bid will be announced by the end of March 2020 at the latest, which is the first time that he has provided a time frame.

A poll by the Chibagin Research Institute has found that local residents in Mihama Ward are decisively opposed to the idea of an IR development in the Makuhari district, with 56 percent against the concept and only 21 percent in favor.

The local business group “Chiba’s Future” is stepping up its campaign to convince the municipal authorities to embrace their plan to build an IR off the coast of the Makuhari district.
