Macau bulldozes historic shipyards

The government has demolished two shipyards in the historic Lai Chi Vun area in Coloane, despite opposition from the Cultural Affairs Bureau, local media reports.

Part of the shipyard structure had collapsed due to lack of maintenance and the government had to take action to ensure public safety, the government said.

It adds the site will become a high-quality space for tourists and citizens after redevelopment.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau says the Lai Chi Vun area had historical value. The bureau argued that maintaining some of the area, which was home to Macau’s junk-building industry, would have been an additional tourist draw.
