Tokyo cops bust first “digital casino”

Within the past week, police have announced busts of two more illegal casinos in the Kabukicho district of Tokyo, including the nation’s first case of a “digital casino” bust.
On October 31, ten people were arrested at the digital casino, including both staff members and some customers.
This casino possessed baccarat tables that used monitors and electronic points rather than chips. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police told the media that they had never seen such a system before.
Investigators suggested that the digital casino was likely a source of funds for the Sumiyoshi-kai yakuza group. A 67-year-old boss of the Sumiyoshi-kai had been arrested in Saitama about a week earlier on the charge of receiving illicit casino money.
Separately, Rob Roy, an illegal casino posing as an internet cafe in Kabukicho, was busted by the police on November 2, netting three arrests.
This facility allegedly connected its computers to overseas internet gambling sites and pulled in a monthly income in excess of JPY10 million (about $88,500) since last summer.
