30 arrested for gambling in Nepal monastery

Police from the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Crime Investigation Division raided an illegal gambling joint being run in a monastery in Swayambhu on Sunday and arrested 24 men and six women along with Rs 1.2 million ($12,000). Those arrested have been sent to the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range in Hanumandhoka for investigation and will be booked under the Gambling Act, said Senior Superintendent of Police Pushkar Karki.

Nepal’s casino industry has faced an uphill battle since they were closed down last year for non-payment of back taxes, although two have since reopened.
