IPI praises CNMI-US consultations

Saipan casino operator Imperial Pacific International says it is happy with the progress of the 902 Consultations between the CNMI and federal governments, Marianas Variety reports.

902 Consultations first occurred in 2007, the discussions are authorized by Section 902 of the Covenant to establish the CNMI in political union with the United States of America. Its aim is to provide the government of the United States and the government of the Northern Mariana Islands a way to consult regularly on all matters affecting the relationship between them, not less frequently than every 10 years.

IPI is currently building the Imperial Pacific Resort and Hotel on the island of Saipan. The casino resort will include more than 200 gaming tables and over 350 slot machines. The 14-storey hotel building will offer more than 340 opulent hotel suites including 15 deluxe villas, and will employ over 2,000 workers in its first phase.

According to local media, the 902 report was transmitted by the CNMI and the Obama White House to the U.S. Congress for review and consideration on Tuesday.

IPI said it recognized Governor Torres “for his tremendous leadership that led to the creation and the eventual transmittal of the 902 consultation report to the U.S. Congress.”

“IPI supports the governor in his efforts to address the need for workers to sustain the CNMI’s continuing economic recovery. IPI has a workforce employment plan that was developed in consultation with the CNMI Department of Labor and continues to work aggressively to diversify its current labor pool by actively recruiting and training permanent residents and U.S. citizens,” it added.
