Miyagi governor undecided on IR bid

Miyagi Governor Yoshihiro Murai stated at his regular press conference on Monday that he has yet to draw any conclusions about whether or not to move forward with an IR bid from his prefecture.

“I want to determine if it is possible to make an IR based on the small size of the local population,” he said. “I want to make a comprehensive decision that considers the feelings of local residents.”

The Miyagi Prefectural Government is currently conducting surveys about the possibility of an IR bid, but these are ongoing and have not yet produced any findings.

Notions of making an IR bid from Miyagi Prefecture first arose in June 2017 when the Iwanuma City Council argued that an IR could help drive the local economy to recover from the devastation of the March 2011 tsunami.

The precise candidate site for an IR in Miyagi Prefecture has never been publicly identified.
