Venues should be penalized: Health groups

Macau health groups are calling for new anti-smoking laws which would see venues penalized for allowing people to smoke indoors, Macau TDM reports.

Tang Chi Ho, the director of the Health Bureau's Tobacco Control office said that while the number of indoor smoking violations had slowed in recent years, it has clearly not stopped after more than 6,700 violations were reported last year.

Tang said just posting non-smoking signs at obvious places inside venues may not be enough, and called on the government to start penalizing venue operators for allowing people to smoke in their venues.

"When the Tobacco Control Office is on patrol, one or two violators would be caught," says Vong Ho Piu the vice-president of the Smoking Abstention and Good Health Association.

"The venues or shops should also be held accountable," he reiterated.
